I made a tree out of brown tape on one of our tables. I included red, green, and yellow play dough, and some cut pipe cleaners for stems. I also provided three apples as examples.
As the children started exploring they easily could see that they were "supposed to make apples". Rolling the play dough into small balls at this age is still difficult and many needed a lot of help. But in the end they all figured it out and became rolling experts.
As the day went on more elaborate play dough playing took place. A sun was made (the giant pokey ball in the middle is the sun). Also snakes and worms had gotten into out apple tree and were eating all the apples. It was intense!
Once they figured out they could mix all the colors that is eventually where they took their play. I think next year I would start with only one color of play dough, and then on day two introduce more colors.
