Hand color mixing

This activity was LOVED by the children.  Sadly there are not really pictures to show you the process.  We read a book about color mixing called "Monsters Love Colors"  (went with our color theme and monster theme - perfect).  In the book the monster "mix, mash, dance, and wiggle" to form new colors.   So of course we had to also.

This process had many steps so try to stay with me.
  • Kids sit at table and get a large paper.
  • each child write their own name on their paper - this is the first time I had introduced writing their name on their art work.  In the end they each had 4 papers - so they got to write their name 4 times - it was great practice.  Most of them can not write their names by them selves yet, so I had their name printed on a slip of paper to help them remember which letter came next and what the letter looked like.
  • Paint each kids right hand with yellow paint.  They LOVED having their hands painted.
  • Stamp paper with yellow hand.
  • Paint left hand with blue paint.
  • Stamp paper with blue hand.
  •  Rub, mash, squish, and wiggle your hands together to make green.
  • Stamp both green hands on your paper.
  • Go wash hands.
  • Come back to table to find a new paper
  • Write name on new paper and repeat process to make orange and purple.
That was all that was supposed to happen but the kids loved it so much they didn't want to stop.  AND they wanted to know what mixing all three colors would do.  So I put a little bit of each color in each hand and had them squish those.  Most made a brownish color.

The children also had to listen closely and remember the steps.  Many times the kids forgot to stamp their hands BEFORE they mixed their hands.  Or some forgot to stamp their hands before they washed their hands.  However, none forgot to mix their hands!

For obvious reasons there are no pictures because the work was intense and messy.  But so fun.  Perfect sensory, writing, science and following directions activity.
