When the snow started to melt and it was obvious spring was on it's way we went on a walking filed trip to our neighborhood park looking for signs of spring.
We started our field trip by reading this book "Hopper Hunts for Spring". It is about a little bunny that is obviously hunting for signs of spring. In the book it talks about several different signs - and we also brainstormed a few of our own ideas before taking off on our own hunt.
Then everyone got their own clipboard and pencil to draw/write what they found.
First sign: Ants
Green grass
When the children made an observation I would draw a simple picture and the word on my clipboard along with the children. Some needed some help to figuring out how to draw some things - other children had their own ideas. They could choose to write the word or not. I encouraged all of them to write the word sun.
Some of the children's clipboards:Once we got to the park we had a snack and played for a minute. Then we read "It's Spring" it is about animals telling each other it is spring and how/why they know its spring. After the reading each child took their journal and some colored pencils to a quite spot in the park and write a story about an animal in the spring.
Then we came back to the blanket and each child took a turn reading their story to all of us.
Then we went home. I just love my little preschoolers!
That is adorable. I love the stories
