aquarium math and science

During our Fish unit we read a really funny book called "memoirs of a Goldfish".  It is about a goldfish who gets new gadgets and fish added to his tank everyday.  Over at our science/math center I set out a few aquariums, some rocks, plants, fish, other aquarium pieces and some water.  On the first day I decided to color it blue.  Than as I observed  I thought that the blue water was making is hard to see the plants and was unnecessary - so the next day I kept it clear and it turns out it was necessary.  It made it much more interesting.

It was so fun to watch the kids try to set up their aquariums.  This was a great lesson in sinking and floating.  Also anchoring things down - the plants would at first stay down, but then after a while they would float up or tip over the quickly learned to anchor things in the rocks.
